A few weeks ago my friend AnnMarie and I stopped by Adam and Eve Salvage in West Palm Beach days before they closed their doors forever. We were greeted with these amazing words that any thrifty, bargain hunting, creative upcycler longs to hear, “All doors are free”. With high school girl giddiness we quickly made our way to the barn housing what was left of the doors no one else had wanted.
AnnMarie was the first to find the dutch door destined to be her new garden gate. I on the other hand felt like Goldilocks going through the house of the three bears, except I couldn’t find the one that was “Just right”. Since I didn’t actually need a door I was waiting for a moment of inspiration. I finally spotted this tall, skinny, vintage screen door with amazing hardware. I wasn’t sure if it was the door or old brass hardware that was speaking to me, but I listened! So we loaded two free doors into the car and headed back to Fort Lauderdale.
I’m assuming it’s only crazy women who have doors speak to them, and as you can imagine it did NOT speak to my husband. The door sat leaning against the back of the house mocking me while I waited for a creative moment to prove to my husband this free door did indeed have a purpose. I turned the door in every direction and even considered only keeping the hardware. I refuse to admit I brought home someone else’s garbage.
Bulletin – Mother’s Day 2014 Inspiration Arrives!
Even with all the work John and I dedicate to the yard, we still have our eyesores. One of ours is the ugly blue rain barrel we built on the side of the house. The skinny old screen door will make the perfect trellis to conceal the barrel and still allow us around the narrow walkway. John removed the old screen from the door for me and added chicken wire. He attached it to the side of the house at a slight angle and I planted my new Florida native coral honeysuckle vine behind the new trellis. It will take a while for the vine to grow in, so in the meantime you will have to use your imagination. The vine will attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to a new section of the yard. A big thank you to my wonderful husband for completing this for me on Mother’s Day!
