Can anyone help me identify this beautiful little hawk?
I was busy adjusting my camera’s manual settings when suddenly every bird in my yard bolted at once. I knew there was a hawk somewhere but my camera’s settings were a mess. Somehow I managed to adjust the camera and get this shot before he flew away. I can’t tell you how excited I was!
He was on the small size and is generally pale in coloring so I first thought he may be a juvenile. After looking at several online birding guides I now think he may be an adult due to his red eye color. I didn’t get a good look at his tail and that is really needed for identification. I have looked at the red shouldered hawk, red tailed hawk, sharp shinned hawk and the coopers hawk. This page at Project FeederWatch has a great comparison of the Sharp-Shinned Hawk and Cooper’s Hawk. I’m leaning towards a coopers hawk. What do you think?
