I learned something about snake sex this weekend when I stumbled upon this pair of mating eastern black racers. I guess this is what you discover when you grab your camera and enjoy your garden instead of your rake and shovel and work your garden.
I tried to get them both in focus, but this wasn’t easy since they were moving about. They were mating after all. Apparently when the male and female snakes mate they become locked together. This can last a half hour, or all day. During this time they move as one snake, to and from different locations if necessary. I witnessed this when we startled each other in the garden. They wiggled off together quite quickly and fluidly as if they were one.
This pair have been hanging out together quite a bit lately. My neighbor texted me a couple of weeks ago and said that my two black snakes were in his garage and he shooed them back home with a broom. I wonder how he feels about lots of black snakes???
